A marker, pen, and colored pencil sketch of Asakusa Temple in Tokyo, sketched days before I experienced the Sanja Matsuri festival there.

Before the vibrant chaos of the Sanja Matsuri, there was a different kind of energy at Asakusa Temple—a calm, expectant hum. I sat in the stillness, markers and pens in hand, trying to capture the quiet power of this place. This temple, founded in 645 AD after two fishermen famously discovered a statue of the goddess Kannon in their net, is the oldest in all of Tokyo. Much of its current form, including the five-story pagoda, has been rebuilt after being destroyed in the 1945 air raids, yet it holds a palpable sense of its ancient past.
