Lost in a Sea of Beckoning Cats: Sketching the Magic of Gotokuji Temple

On my recent sketching journey through Tokyo, I stumbled upon a truly enchanting place: Gotokuji Temple, famously known as the “Cat Temple.” I had heard tales of this unique location, but nothing could quite prepare me for the sheer number of beckoning cat statues (maneki-neko) that greeted me.

From tiny figurines nestled in corners to larger statues guarding pathways, thousands of these charming white cats filled the temple grounds. Each one, with its raised paw, seemed to whisper a silent blessing of good fortune. The atmosphere was both whimsical and deeply peaceful, a truly captivating blend.

I found a quiet spot and let my pen dance across the page, attempting to capture the unique energy of Gotokuji – conveying the sense of abundance, the quiet devotion, and the sheer joy that emanated from this extraordinary place.
