Introduction: The Quest Begins
Vienna whispers tales of emperors and empresses, their grandeur still echoing through its streets and palaces. Join me on a watercolor quest to uncover these royal echoes, a visual journey through 10 iconic locations. I wanted to use watercolours on this trip, to show a different view of Vienna, but also used pencil sketches as research for the watercolours, and to capture other locations.
Chapter 1: Michaelerplatz – A Royal Entrance
Our quest begins in Michaelerplatz, a public space where imperial processions and everyday Viennese life intersected. The cobblestones here have witnessed centuries of history, a grand entrance to the Hofburg Palace. My detailed pencil sketch captures the architectural elegance of this square, the intricate details of the buildings framing the space. Imagine the horse-drawn carriages and the bustling crowds that once filled this square, a gateway to imperial power.

Chapter 2: Palmenhaus Schönbrunn & Burggarten Brasserie – A Glimpse of Imperial Life
Next, our quest takes us to the Burggarten, a serene park that once belonged to the Habsburgs. Here, we find the Palmenhaus Schönbrunn, a stunning greenhouse structure that hints at the imperial family’s love for exotic flora. My watercolor painting captures the Palmenhaus’s elegant exterior, with its arched glass and intricate ironwork, bathed in the soft Viennese light. Before painting, I made a detailed exterior pencil sketch to understand the building’s architectural details.
Inside the Palmenhaus, we discover the Burggarten Brasserie, a cozy restaurant where the echoes of imperial Vienna mingle with the buzz of modern life. My interior pencil sketch captures the brasserie’s warm atmosphere, with its high ceilings and lush greenery. Imagine sipping coffee here, where emperors once strolled through the adjacent gardens. These two locations, the grand Palmenhaus and the inviting Brasserie, showcase the diverse ways in which Vienna’s imperial past intertwines with its present.



Chapter 3: Mariahilfer Straße – A Royal Promenade
We continue our quest along Mariahilfer Straße, a grand avenue where the wealthy and those connected to the court would have strolled. My pencil sketch captures the street’s elegant facades and bustling energy, a reminder of Vienna’s opulent past. Our quest leads us to the Kunsthistorisches Museum Cafe, a place where the intellectual and artistic elite, often connected to the court, would gather.
