10 Royal Realms: A Sketcher’s Journey Through Central Europe’s Castles & Spa Towns

Central Europe’s landscape is dotted with magnificent castles and elegant towns, each a testament to the region’s rich and evolving royal history. Join me on a chronological journey, sketchbook in hand, as we explore 10 of these “Royal Realms,” tracing the footsteps of monarchs and capturing their legacies in art.

1. Nuremberg Castle and Old Town, Germany: Echoes of the Medieval Era (11th-16th Centuries)

Our journey begins in Nuremberg, where the old town’s medieval architecture transported me back in time. My pencil sketches aimed to capture the city’s historic charm and the stories etched in its ancient stones.

Nuremberg’s old town, with its medieval walls, Gothic churches, and the imposing Nuremberg Castle, reflects the city’s role as a vital center of the Holy Roman Empire during the medieval period.

  • Travel Tips: Nuremberg is easily accessible by train or plane. Explore the old town on foot and visit the Nuremberg Castle and the Documentation Center Nazi Party Rally Grounds.

2. Karlstejn Castle, Czechia: A Gothic Gem (14th Century)

Our adventure continues at Karlstejn Castle, a 14th-century Gothic masterpiece commissioned by Charles IV. Before I captured its imposing silhouette in watercolor, I spent time exploring its intricate details through two pencil sketches. These initial works allowed me to understand the castle’s structure and atmosphere, preparing me for the challenge of painting it. Then, as I worked on the final watercolor painting, the heavens opened. The sudden downpour added a dramatic, almost cinematic quality to the scene. The wet paint blended with the rain, creating a unique texture that reflects the castle’s rugged beauty, and the strong stone walls. The rain also made it hard to work, but the effect was worth it.

Karlstejn Castle, built to house the Holy Roman Emperor’s crown jewels, stands as a testament to medieval power and artistry during the 14th century.

  • Travel Tips: To get here, take a train from Prague to Karlštejn village, followed by a short uphill walk. The best time to visit is during the shoulder seasons (spring or fall) to avoid crowds.

4. Prague Castle, Czechia: A Royal Seat Through Centuries (9th-18th Centuries)

From Petřín Hill, I captured a panoramic view of Prague Castle, a sprawling complex that has witnessed centuries of Czech history. Before embarking on the final mixed-media piece, which combined pencil, ink pen, and color pencil, I worked on several pencil sketches. These initial studies allowed me to understand the castle’s overall composition and its place within the cityscape. The color pencil sketch, created from some distance, emphasizes the castle’s silhouette against the skyline, capturing its grandeur without delving into minute details. This distant perspective helped me appreciate the castle’s scale and its integration with the surrounding landscape, which I then incorporated into the more detailed final artwork.

Prague Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has served as the seat of Czech rulers for centuries, with architectural additions reflecting various periods from the 9th to the 18th centuries.

  • Travel Tips: Prague Castle is easily accessible by public transport or on foot. Allow ample time to explore the castle complex, including St. Vitus Cathedral and the Golden Lane.
